Paul (IT guru) came round this morning for another training stint on web page editing. Then we went up to John and Christine's to see how their garden is coming on. I just could not believe the transformation, how well they have done. All the hard labour they've put in has giving them a very satisfactory result. Eat your heart out Alan Tichmarsh. I could even practice my chipping on the lawn. Very well done to you both. Just hope Michele doesn't get any idea's.

This evening we went out with John and Christine to Kervan's klefitco night (Kleftiko, lamb or chicken wrapped in a foil bag with herbs and potatoes baked outside in a clay oven) it was really good and again we were last to leave, we blame Ertan (owner) for starting us off with the local brandy. Will have to remember to let him taste some of my single malt 'Oban'.

A lazy day today, just a quick visit to the site for my mate Onest onge to check that the workers at bubbles villa are making progress, they were very busy.

Played golf today with Brian Hardie and his dad Alasdair who is over on holiday and is a handy golfer. Maybe Brian will learn something about how to improve his golf from him. Michele and I then went shopping to the local Lemar supermarket

Stayed in all day doing web page pictures.

Played golf today with Rev and Alisdair Hardie. I was well beat and returned home to get another thrashing from Michele at tavla (backgammon). Well, can't expect to win all the time.

A nice drive was on the cards for today and headed west towards the Maronite village of Koruçam. (Maronites are the descendants of the Aramaean Christians of ancient Syria.) On leaving the village we came across this small church then continued towards the coast to the village of Sadrazamköy which is very old, poor and in need of restoration yet 500 metres through the village this is to be seen Wonder how the locals feel!

The next village we came to was Tepebasi, again quite small but richer than Sadrazamköy but you may not think so when you see the village shop

Heading back home we pass Panagra Dam which is a great place for nature walks all sorts of wildlife and flowers including orchids

The golf course was calling me, went there with Rev and George a friend of his who is across on holiday. It was an up and down game that Rev won 4 and 3.Whilst there I took a picture of Brian Hardie teeing off, looks like a one handed swing.

A drive east to Famagusta (Gazimagusa) rich with historical sites (a later visit) and modern cultural and social values. Renaissance city walls, Shakespeare's Othello Castle, Da Vinci's Port Del Mar it is full of beauty and charm. It was founded as Arsinoe by the Macedonian Egyptian king Ptolemy in 246 bc.

We entered the old town and found that just like Girne they are upgrading the roads we easily found parking and visited the gothic style cathedral of St Nicholas which was built by the Lusignans between 1298-1312 and the Lusignan kings of Cyprus were crowned there. During Ottoman rule it was changed in to a Cami (mosque) and now called Lala Mustafa Pasha.

Later when having coffee with absolutely delicious cake (funny how we always manage a slice of cake when out for coffee) in Kemats patisserie which boasts of home made chocolate that looked gorgeous. We heard singing, when I looked into the main area the customers who we think were an Austrian party, were performing for the locals. Jim was tempted to give them a couple of verses of "Flower of Scotland" but couldn't compete with them.

Later, we had a walk round the Venetian Palace square built in the 13th century by the Lusignans when leaving Famagusta we saw this very impressive cami. We will have return another day as there is so much to see.

Laaaaaaaaazy day

Pairs competition today using only 1 ball and alternate shots. Rev and I were doing really well until the par 5 13th we took a 9 ( I refuse to say who drove their drive onto the beach.. Rev are your feet wet? ) then a double bogey at the 18th. Finished with a 71, the winning score was 69 we came in 2nd. Well done Memo and Akay 'If only'

This evening we went down to Boaters with John and Christine then dinner at East Meets West. Last to leave again. another great night out and a nice walk home.

A late start and laaaaazy morning with a visit to the bank in the afternoon, only a 15 minute wait today but we did have an appointment!! Then a strange visit to the electricity payment office. Our bill for August/September came to 22,590,276 TL (£8.44) but because the cashier had no change, he said he'd charge us 23,000,000TL a difference of 15p. Wonder if we'll get a 15p reduction in 2 months time. This happens frequently in the supermarkets too, if they don't have change, they'll give you a bubble gum or a box of matches, it always makes Michele laugh.

Another day at the golf was not my best day but still enjoyed it. Returned home to find Michele not only on the laptop but also the phone, the house had been cleaned and the food was on the table. Here's me thinking she would have an easy day. .

An early start today, we went south to the Military Garrison at Dhekelia. Jim wanted to buy more golf equipment, plus a few items for his pals. He was duly signed in at the camp and went along to the pro shop with the ex golf captain and made his purchases. I just waited at the gate watching the world go by. A good 45 minutes later I heard Jim shout to me "They won't let me out" I had a little chuckle and carried on watching people go buy. It turned out that the chap who signed him in also had to sign him out, he had forgotten this and was now playing on the golf course. The guards were having none of it and still refused to hand back Jim's passport. Eventually Jim found the Garrison Commander and the ex Captain at the 1st tee, apologies and papers signed, Jim could now leave the base. What a palaver.

Now on to Famagusta (Gazimagusa) We were told about a little supermarket which has lots of British goodies, so trolley at the ready we set off down the aisles, potato scones, pork sausages, bacon, sausage meat, lurpak butter, English cheese even a box of Mr Kipling bakewell tarts. Icing sugar and marzipan. We will have a Christmas cake after all.

Back North and to deliver goodies to our friends Christine and John. They now have a garden shed, wooden archway with Jasmine growing over it and a gazebo all hand made by John himself. Have already signed him up for our garden.

There were no queues at the border crossings today which made a nice change.

Another early start for Jim, today is golf day. He joins his partner and anyone else, who may be playing, at the Pegasos at 6am. It's a 45 minute drive to the course. This early start also lets them play most of their game before the sun is at it's hottest.

When Jim returned we went to the building site and whilst there tried to get close up pictures of the lizards that were about. Easier said than done.

Our landlord Donald comes over today for 2 weeks with some of his friends, we had agreed that Michele and me would move out during his stay. Michele was working at Unwins when we booked into the Ship hotel, it was only a 5 minute walk otherwise we would have gone to the Manolya.

Michele had a bit of a head cold so when we booked in I went for a swim and Michele had a lie down. In the evening we just went to the hotel restaurant for dinner. After placing our order we were given 2 boreks ? then about 10 minutes later another 2, was this somebody else's starters? they were quite nice. We enjoyed our meal and it was a nice setting

Woke up at my usual time, 5am. My body clock has this now firmly set, only wish I could lie in longer, but then I would miss sitting out on the balcony with my cup of tea looking at the views.

I decided that I would leave Michele to rest and go to the golf course for some practice, came back about 3pm and she was feeling a little better so we went down town for coffee and cake and a walk round the harbour.

The rugby league cup final Leeds vs Bradford was on sky tonight and I arranged with John to meet him at Billy's bar to watch it, good game but I think maybe too many beers

An early start today for the golf . However just as I thought, the beers from last night did not do anything for my game, 2 balls lost in the 1st 5 holes, I took the hint early and packed up after 6 holes. Back to the hotel and a swim with Michele who has now recovered from her head cold.

Early evening we visited our friends Colin and Linda's new build to see how it was progressing, all I could tell them was that it hasn't even been staked out yet. On the way back we went past a local farm and Michele just had to stop and take this picture

We stopped of at Ezic for a chicken dinner which as always was very tasty, its a good job you can go there dressed up or casual as Michele had her flip flops on.

Up early again this morning 6am went downstairs to the foyer to update the web page and let Michele carry on sleeping (so considerate) After breakfast we will visit the hospital for our medical tests which is part of the application for residency criteria.

We had expected this to be a rather long day. We were going to the hospital for medical tests in order to stay in the country. How it goes, is that, you turn up on an appointed day, pay your money and have blood and stool samples taken then along to x-ray to have your chest zapped, wait a month, go back to hospital for the results then take them along to immigration at the police station. Easy as that. We have heard that many people pay a large sum of money to have a Turkish speaking person with them. But we were in for the experience of a lone ride.

Now for how it actually went..... Arrived at the hospital at 10.00 fought our way through about 50 people who were just hovering at the cash desk waiting to be seen and probably catching up on local gossip and was then issued with two numbers 105 and 121. Umm Shell, wonder what happened to No's 106 to 120. Took a seat and waited, during which time we found a man with number 120 and swapped our 105 with him. At least we would now be called together. Still with me? At 12.00 our numbers were called and we returned to the same desk to pay our fees (£158 each) Then back to taking a seat and waiting till they called out our numbers a second time. Now 1pm and three hours later we heard our numbers called again (called out in Turkish I hasten to add, luckily, Michele had only last week memorised the Turkish from 1 to 999) This time all our documents were being checked and yes, it was back to playing the waiting game. The third time they called our numbers was to collect our documents and specimen bottles and yippee, off to start the tests. Blood and stools completed, we had now learned that x-ray was closed and would have to return on Wednesday...

During our waiting game, I found an administrator who spoke English (probably the only English speaking person in the hospital) "Surely all these people weren't immigrants like us" I asked, Yes, he retorted. The hospital processes approx 250 per day, 6 months ago it was 10 a day and yes they were all immigrants, the reason the figures have jumped up is that there were many illegal workers from Turkey and the government were now doing spot checks. He was annoyed that we couldn't get x-rayed after our lengthy wait and made several phone calls but could only apologise for the hospitals total lack of organisation. No worries, we'll come and have another chat with you on Wednesday.

Back to the hotel for a swim, a few games of backgammon and a well deserved long cool beer.

Early start for the golf today didn’t play too well. I had been diving into the pool and larking about yesterday and had earache. Heard the sound of waterfalls all day, that’s my excuse anyway. Michele had a nice easy morning by the poolside and we met up later for a swim and our now, traditional game, of backgammon.

Early afternoon, we were visited by our IT guru, Paul. As you will have noticed in the Photo Album, not all pictures are clear, we now have new software and a difference should be noticed from now on. Just a little technical hiccup, sorry folks. I'll make all the changes tomorrow so that future pics will be clearer.

Didn’t fancy eating in the hotel tonight so took a walk along to the Pegasos for a drink and a bite to eat only to discover that food wasn’t on the menu for tonight. Ah well, the G&T’s were good. Walked along to a pizza bar, found it shut and eventually found an Indian restaurant, delicious food and great service. 1 G&T, 3 beers, poppadums, 2 starters, 2 main courses, Irish coffee and a large brandy came to £28.

Today was back to the hospital in Lefkosa for our chest x-rays. We were told the department opened at 9am so arrived at 9 and sat in the waiting room. 9.45 the x-ray room door opened and to our surprise we were in and out within 15 minutes. All that remains now is for us to receive a phone call telling us to come pick up our results which should be in about a months time…..Watch this space folks, bets are on as to if we will hear in a month or that results have been lost.

Medicals over, it was now time to visit the Post office in Girne to get a PO Box number so we can start receiving UK mail. Unfortunately no box’s available and we have to try again in the New Year.

Back to the hotel so Jim could work on the web, I caught up on the UK gossip by reading Saturday’s paper. Poor Posh & Becks are receiving a hard time. Will they last?

Sitting on the balcony with afternoon coffee watching the world go by, no it's not a rally, just vehicles taking a short cut during peak hour traffic.

As we're staying close to the Pegasos we decided to call in for a pre dinner drink then took a slow walk back to the hotel for dinner.

Another early start for Jim, it's golf day and he came back smiling which signals a good round with Rev. I just stayed pool side relaxing on a lounger reading a book. Even though it's 21st October, the temperature is still 32 degrees.

A quick drink at the Pegasos and a chat with Sir Robert, it's his birthday on Sunday and he's invited us to his house in Karaman along with another 30 or so guests, should be a good day. We then went to a restaurant called Mediterranean Breeze which serves fish 'n chips to the sound of 'Roger B', singing in the background. Nice clean setting, good service and the closest fish 'n chips you'll get to those back home but for me, you can't beat eating them from a newspaper. Back to the Ship Inn, a nightcap in the bar and bed.

Market day at the Pegasos today, took a walk along for morning coffee and bought a nice Danish pastry (home made and very yummy too)

Then drove on to Guzelyurt a 30 minute drive away. Visited the Archaeology and Nature museum. The nature part holds a collection of stuffed animals ranging from birds, snakes to a six legged sheep all used for educational purposes. .

The archaeology part displays artefacts from the Neolithic era (1st known inhabitants of Cyprus) going through Bronze age and onto middle and late ages. Next door is the St Mamas monastery and was built in the 18th century. The wood, carved and painted in blue and gold is an exquisite example of the late 16th century wood carving. The floor, marble and features figs, grapes, acorns and Venetian shields. It's sarcophagus contains 2 holes from which a balm against eye and ear diseases and other illnesses oozes

Today we ventured again down South and into Lefkosa, hadn't really noticed before on just how many familiar stores there are. River Island, M&S to name but two. Then drove on to Farmagusta to the supermarket which stocks lots of British goods. Trolley at the ready our eyes lit up when we saw - Scotch pies, potato scones, Cumberland sausages, sausage meat, bacon even a pack of Mr Kipling's exceedingly good cakes.

Golf this morning then off to Sir Roberts birthday bash in Karaman. Karaman is a situated high up and the road is a little tricky to say the least, but we got there. About 35 guests, donner kebabs and plenty to drink it was a very nice afternoon. Because we had arranged to meet Christine and John we left around 5pm just giving us time to shower and change.

We went to 'The Corner' in Alsancak for a few drinks and a good old chinwag, ended up leaving at 2.30am. We were the only 4 people there but the bar was kept open until we were ready to leave

Oh dear!! Awoke this morning at 8am and showered before breakfast. I was ok as I had been on soft drinks all night (the driver) but poor Jim was suffering so it was back to bed with a DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door.

The phone awoke Jim at around 10.am it was our builder wanting us to go to Lefkosa to choose our floor tiles and this had to be done today of all days. We drove through but as there was some kind of military procession, the main road was closed and this added an extra 30 minutes to our journey. Anyway, the tiles chosen, it was back to the Ship and back to the poolside for a few more zzz's

Golf for the October medal today and in the evening we ate at 'Temroz' in Zeytinlik. A tasty meal and friendly hosts.

Met with C & J and took them to our site in Karakum, they hadn't seen it since the foundations had been laid. Stopped off at Hasan's garden to gather some citrus fruit. How nice it is to eat the fruit or drink the juice freshly picked.

Evening meal at the Ship and still eating 'Al fresco'

Met Donald, our landlord this evening. He's been across here for 2 weeks on holiday along with friends from France and Italy. We dined at Dunya's. It's a place we have driven by lots of times and is so unassuming that we never gave it a thought - however we were led to the garden and sat at tables under trees which were covered in tiny fairy lights. A wonderful setting. There must have been at least 14 dishes (meze) on the table which made our taste buds dance with delight then this was followed by deep fried courgette and cheese. Just when our bellies were full, out came chicken kebabs and lamb chops. Followed by a tray of fresh fruit all washed down with free local drinks, wine, rakki, coffee and brandy to finish it off. What a feast and a great night we all had.

Awoke this morning and counted no fewer than 14 mosquito bites on my legs. I must remember to take a repellent with me. Can anyone recommend a good one to use?

A lazy start to the morning with a swim followed by a little lie in the sun. Noticed the sky was darkening over Lefkosa and heard rumbling in the distance, so, dressed and walked along to the Pegasos for a soft drink and a Danish pastry as it was their Friday market. On our way back to the Ship, the drops of rain were becoming quite big and we made it back just in time before the downpour and the thunder storm. Not wanting to sit in, we took the car and drove to the sea front to hopefully capture lightning and the waves crashing on camera. Turned out to be not as exciting as we hoped. The rain only lasted an hour and it wasn't blustery enough to see crashing waves. Oh well, it is only the end of October.

This evening we ate at Jashan's an Indian restaurant along the road and as usual, it was very nice.

This morning we booked out of the Ship and moved back to the penthouse. It's so nice to be back 'home'. OK it was good not having to cook or wash dishes but sometimes all I fancied was a bowl of soup and of course, all this space we have in the flat is fab.

This evening, Jim went along to Billy's bar to watch the rugby with John but I stayed home and had a nice relaxing evening.

Today we did a shop then drove along to the Carob houses. These are almost at completion and are being built by the same building company we have. The finishing's are to be the same, so just as a reassurance we took a look. Great, can hardly wait to be in our own place now.
